Power BI Dataflow for Oracle Fusion: Steps to Connect Using BI Connector and Automate Refresh

Before you start

  • A BI Connector Data Source and Table already created on the Gateway Server. If not, set up your Data Source and Table first: BI Publisher Data Models or Analysis & OTBI Reports.
  • Access to create a connection to the Gateway Data Source, or an existing connection to the required data source.
  • The right Power BI license (see below).

 

License — Incremental refresh needs at least a Power BI Premium Per User (PPU) license.

 

Part A — Create the Dataflow in Power BI

Step 1 — Log in and open your workspace

Log in to Power BI and open the workspace where you want to create the Dataflow.

 

Step 2 — Create a new Dataflow Gen1

Click + New item at the top left. Search for Dataflow, select Dataflow Gen1, then click No, create a Dataflow Gen1.

Step 3 — Add new tables

Under the Define new tables card, click Add new tables.

 

Step 4 — Choose the BI Connector connector

Search for BI Connector and select it.

 

Step 5 — Enter the Data Source and connect

Enter the name of your BI Connector Data Source (case sensitive). If a connection already exists, Power BI picks it up automatically. If not, create one on the same screen: choose Basic authentication and enter your credentials.

Note — For JWT authentication, enter the Client Secret as the password. Use the same Service Account username that the BI Connector Data Source uses on the Gateway Server, or the JWT connection will not work.

 

Step 6 — Select the table

Click Next. Expand the database on the left, then select the schema and the table you want.

 

Step 7 — Transform and rename if needed

Click Transform Data. Avoid transformations here and perform them downstream when connecting to this dataflow in Power BI Desktop for dashboarding.

Note — Some BI Publisher Data Model table names exceed the character limit allowed for a dataflow table name. If needed, edit and trim the Name field on the right side.

 

Step 8 — Save the Dataflow

Click Save and Close, then give the Dataflow a name.

 

Part A complete! Your Dataflow is created. Continue to Part B to refresh it and schedule automated refreshes.

 

Part B — Refresh and schedule the Dataflow

Step 9 — (Optional) Set up incremental refresh

If you need incremental refresh, click the incremental icon (the right-most icon shown next to the table name on the right). Select the date column, set your incremental requirements, and save.

Step 10 — Run the first refresh

Click Refresh now. Go to the workspace and wait for the refresh to complete.

 

Step 11 — Schedule automated refreshes

Once the refresh is done, click the ⋯ (three dots) on the Dataflow and select Settings. Under the Refresh section, set up the schedule for automated refreshes and click Apply.
