A few Oracle FDI, OAC, OAS, OBIEE users may occasionally want to connect Power BI or Tableau to DV Datasets or Extended Subject Areas (XSAs).

Unlike the standard Subject Areas (the org-wide Enterprise Semantic Models created and maintained at the RPD layer), the DV Datasets or XSAs are usually Excel or CSV files that individual users directly pull into the Oracle Analytics platform for personal use.

This article explains what BI Connector can and cannot reach, and how to get DV Dataset data into Power BI or Tableau.

What BI Connector connects to

BI Connector works with the Analysis reports created using the standard Subject Areas (the ones maintained as Enterprise Semantic Models). The connector does not work with DV Datasets — the Excel or CSV files users pull directly from their local machine into OAC, FDI, OAS, or OBIEE.

Why DV Datasets aren't supported? - Oracle APIs have the provision to fetch data only from Analysis reports that are created out of the standard Subject Areas, but not from the DV Datasets. Hence, BI Connector could not fetch data from DV Datasets. The quick solution that BI Connector users rely on in this scenario is shared below.

The Quick Solution to tap into the DV Datasets

Both Power BI and Tableau have native file connectors for Excel, CSV and other file formats. Hence, the quick solution is to connect Power BI or Tableau directly to the underlying source (the Excel or CSV files) of your DV Datasets using those file connectors instantly.
