[BI Connector v 6.x] Connect Tableau to Oracle OTBI, OAC, OAS, OBIEE, Fusion Analytics Data Models via ODBC - Step-by-Step User Guide

Modified on Fri, 31 May at 9:35 AM

BI Connector v6.x and above provides connectivity from Tableau to Oracle Data Models. Please note you can use only the Extract mode in Tableau for connecting to the Data Models, and the Live mode is not supported.

Following is a general tutorial for connecting from Tableau to Oracle Data Models (in the following applications) via the BI Connector using Extract mode.

  • Oracle Transactional Business Intelligence (OTBI) that's available as a part of:
    • Oracle Fusion Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Applications
    • Oracle Fusion Supply Chain Management (SCM) Applications
    • Oracle Fusion Human Capital Management (HCM) Applications
    • Oracle Fusion Customer Experience (CX) Applications
  • Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC)
  • Oracle Analytics Server (OAS)
  • Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE)
  • Oracle OPERA Cloud
  • Taleo
  • NetSuite

Pre-requisites

  1. Tableau Desktop v2021.2 or above.
  2. BI Connector Desktop Edition for Tableau. (Step-by-Step Installation Guide for BI Connector Desktop Edition for Tableau)

Connecting from Tableau to Oracle Data Models

Launch Tableau Desktop

Launch Tableau Desktop. Click on More under the To a Server section, and select Other Databases (ODBC)

Other Databases (ODBC) Connector in Tableau

Now a Pop-up as below will open prompting you to enter the DSN information. Please select the DSN option.

ODBC select DSN

Enter DSN Information

  • Open the BI Connector application, click on the Data Source menu on the left side pane, and copy the Data Source Name for the Data Model connection that was created.
Copy the Data Source name for the Data Model connection that you created in BI Connector console
  • In the Tableau instance that was opened earlier, paste the Data Source Name (that you copied in the previous step from the BI Connector application) on the box next to the DSN option on the pop-up, and click on the Connect button.
  • Now another pop-up like below would open. Please enter your Oracle password and click Save.

At this point, if the credential you entered is correct, the Sign In button would be enabled in the pop-up that showed at first, and the fields in its Connection Attributes section would be auto-populated. Please click on the Sign In button.

Connect to the Database and Select the Schema and Table

Now select the Database, followed by the Schema, and the Table. For Schema and Table selections, you can click the search icon to see all the available items. The table name in Tableau will also begin with the same Table that you created for the Data Model in the BI Connector application.

At this stage, please select the Extract option to tell Tableau to use this as an Extract connection (as Live queries are not supported for Data Models).

Click on the worksheet at the bottom left. You'll then be prompted to give a file name to save the extract. Please give a name that's easy for you to identify the Tableau extract file. Now you can navigate to the worksheet and start creating the Tableau reports and dashboards out of your Oracle Data Models data.
