Before you start
- You can sign in to the Power BI Service with permission to build content (a Build permission on the semantic model, or a Contributor role in the workspace).
- You have a published semantic model you can access — for example, one created from a Dataflow or published with a report.
Steps
Step 1 — Log in to the Power BI Service
Log in to the Power BI Service (app.powerbi.com) in your browser.
Step 2 — Find the semantic model
Open the workspace and locate the semantic model (dataset) you want to build on. You can also use the search box at the top to find it by name.
Step 3 — Create a report from it
Click the three dots (More options) next to the semantic model and select Create report (or open the semantic model and click Create a report). A blank report opens in web authoring, connected to that model.
Note — A published semantic model is a shared, governed dataset. You build reports on top of it without changing its underlying model — measures, relationships, and data stay centrally managed.
Step 4 — Build the report
From the Data pane, drag fields onto the canvas and choose visuals from the Visualizations pane. Add slicers and filters, and format the visuals as needed.
Step 5 — Save the report
Click File > Save, give the report a clear name, choose the workspace, and save.
Done! Your report is saved to the Power BI Service for your team to view, and it stays current with the published semantic model and its refresh schedule.
