The following is a general tutorial for connecting from Power BI to OBIEE using Direct Query with BI Connector Desktop Edition.


Pre-requisites


  1. Follow the Step-by-Step Installation Guide for BI Connector Desktop Edition for Microsoft PowerBI to install and configure BI Connector in your PC
  2. If you are using Microsoft Power BI Desktop June 2017 update or later, please refer to the following article to enable BI Connector in the Power BI Desktop.

Connecting from Power BI to OBIEE Subject Areas


Step 1: Launch Power BI. Select Get Data option.



Alternately, You can select Get Data Option ,



 Step 2: In the Get Data Dialog, Scroll down and select BI Connector.



Step 3: Click Connect and BI Connector dialog box pops up. .



Step 4: Next, enter server information,

  • Enter the server name for your OBIEE instance with port.
  • Ex: http://guidanz.cloudapp.net:8888
  • In Features Drop down box, select Subject Areas.
  • In SSO drop down box, 
    • Select Default option if you want to connect to OBIEE's default SSO option or,
    • Select None if you want to connect to OBIEE without SSO.

  • In Subject Area/Report's Name text box, 
    • Enter the partial or full name of the Subject Area to search for.  Enter two or more Subject Areas separated by commas to search for multiple Subject Areas.
  • Select Direct Query radio button.
  • Click Ok button.


Step 5: Click on the Database name and connect to the required database.



Step 6: On successful connection, list of Subject Areas will be displayed. Select a Subject Area from the list.


Step 7: select one or more tables from the list and click on load.




Create Relationships


Note: BI Connector doesn't support bidirectional cross-filtering for DirectQuery. For more details, refer this article.


Step 1:  Click on Mange Relationship and Manage relationship dialog pops up. Select New in the Manage relationship dialog as shown below.




Step 2: Select the Fact table from the drop down list as shown.






Step 3: Again select any dimension table from the drop down list as shown and relate tables to one another.






Step 4: Select the column GZID on both tables and a cardinality and Click Ok button.  


Note: GZID is a BI connector virtual column that is used to ensure that PowerBI uses OBIEE joins for the direct query.  



Create Visualization


Step 1:  Drag and drop the columns from the fact and dimension tables.   Now you have created your first Power BI Visualization for OBIEE data.  Congratulations!
